His name is running throughout the football world in the past few weeks due to the amazing goals he scores, almost on a weekly basis.
He is Juan Fernando, or Juanfer, Quintero.
Until not too long ago, it seemed that the Colombian’s career was going nowhere, when he couldn’t find himself in European football with spells at Pescara, Porto and Rennes, after being tipped as someone who lacks the professional approach to succeed.
Then he came back to Colombia and joined Independiente Medellin in 2017. There he gained back his form, just to sign on loan at Argentinian mega-club River Plate. From there on there was no looking back.
Quintero has revived his career and is currently considered as one of the best players in South America.
In the past two months, Quintero has scored several beautiful goals for River Plate and reminded the world why he was considered as one of the most talented players in the world by FIFA five years ago.
After his astonishing goals in the Superclasico Libertadores, against Rosario Central & Racing Club, Quintero went back on worldwide headlines. 10 - 9.12.18 – River Plate vs. Boca Juniors, Copa Libertadores final, 2nd leg.
3-3 on aggregate and we are going to extra time. Then, in the 109th minute, Quintero, a substitute, sent this amazing ball to the back of the net. This screamer gave River the lead before they finally won 5-3 on aggregate, and came out victorious in one of the biggest club games of all time.
9 – 10.2.19 – River Plate v Racing Club, Argentina Superliga
River hosted Racing in the Argentine league and in the 31st minute Quintero scored one of the prettiest goals you’ll see this year. River has won 2-0.
8 – 13.2.19 – Rosario Central v River Plate, Superliga Argentina
Central hosted River for a massive game, but Juanfer stole the show with this wonderful shot from an impossible angle. At the end the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
7 – 6.10.18 – River Plate v Sarmiento, Copa Argentina
On the 26th minute, Quintero stole the ball, dribbled past the goalkeeper and scored the first out of two goals that day. River won the match 3-1. Quintero style.
6 – 19.6.18 – Colombia v Japan, 2018 World Cup
The Japanese were leading 1-0 and in the 39th minute Quintero with one of the smartest free kicks ever, manage to equalize the score. Despite Colombia losing 2-1 in this match, this goal was nominee for the 2018 World Cup goal of the tournament.
5 – 17.1.13 – Colombia v Argentina, 2013 U-20 South America Championship
The game was in Argentina, and the home team led 3-1 before Quintero scored one of the best goals in the tournament, but couldn’t prevent the loss.
4 – 3.7.13 – South Korea v Colombia, 2013 U-20 World Cup round of 16
South Korea was up 1-0 when Los Cafeteros had their last chance to save themselves from elimination. Quintero shot a magnificent free kick in stoppage time, equalized but at the end South Korea won in a penalty shoot-out.
3 – 18.2.12 – Millonarios v Atletico Nacional, Liga Aguila
Colombia’s clasico between the great two rivals from the country’s two main cities at El Campin stadium in Bogota. The score was 2-2 when Quintero decided to do a ‘Quintero’ in the 75th minute and win the match for Nacional. Crack total.
2 – 9.3.17 – Independiente Medellin v Deportivo Pasto, Liga Aguila
Juan Fernando Quintero scored one of the best goals during that year after only 6 minutes. Medellin won the match 4-1.
1 – 16.8.17 – Cali v Independiente Medellin, Liga Aguila
The Paisas played in Cali and was down 1-0, but Quintero managed to equalize with this awesome free kick and eventually Medellin turned things around to win 3-1.
