Another weekend, more drama in the Belarusian league - as the division gets increasingly tight.
Only 6 points separate first and fourteenth places, which means every game in the next few weeks is crucial for teams as they see how their season develops.
The biggest Cinderella so far, FK Slutsk, survived late drama to stay in the driver’s seat.
Slutsk v Belshina Bobryisk
Despite being a battle between top and bottom, guests Belshina put up a great fight and eventually succumbed in the final minutes.
A long ball in the 20th minute caught the guest’s defence unprepared, and a few passes in the box led to a Mohammed Bala easy tap-in. Fifteen minutes later, Artem Serdyuk scored from the goal-line after a bad error from Belshina’s goalkeeper Sergey Turanok. Slutsk seemed to be cruising, but let their guard off even before half-time, as Leonid Kovel luckily managed to claw one back after a clearance hit him and went in. 2-1 at half time
The momentum was all Belshina going into the second half, and in the 52nd minute it paid off with a Pavel Bordukov header. The worst team in the league has incredibly equalized, 2-2. The game remained uneventful until the turning point in the 85th minute, when Belshina defender Nikita Rochev saw a second yellow card.
Cinderella teams who want to go far in the league must have the ability to win tight games in dramatic fashion, and Slutsk have done just that: A 85th minute header by Bala, his second goal of the game, proved to be the winner. Amazing scenes in the stadium, as the hosts are back in pole position.
