Vietnam Beats Thailand to Win ASEAN Title

Vietnam captured their third ASEAN Championship title (2008, 2018, 2024) with a thrilling 3-2 win against Thailand in the second leg of the final at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium on Sunday.

The victory secured a 5-3 aggregate triumph following a 2-1 win in Hanoi, delivering a sweet revenge for Vietnam after their defeat in the 2022 final against the same rivals.

Vietnam opened the scoring early through Pham Tuan Hai, silencing the home crowd and putting the pressure on Thailand. However, the defending champions rallied and found an equalizer in the 28th minute, with Ben Davis finishing a well-crafted team move. Thailand looked to seize control after Supachok Sarachat’s 64th-minute strike gave them a 2-1 lead and tied the aggregate at 3-3, momentarily putting them in contention for back-to-back titles.

The game turned dramatically in the 74th minute when Weerathep Pomphan received a red card, reducing Thailand to ten men. Vietnam capitalized swiftly, equalizing in the 82nd minute through an unfortunate own goal by Pansa Hemviboon. Deep into extra time, Nguyen Hai Long emerged as the hero, scoring a stunning winner in the 110th minute to seal Vietnam’s victory and ignite celebrations among their fans.

This triumph further solidifies Vietnam's status as a regional powerhouse, demonstrating resilience, tactical discipline, and a relentless fighting spirit. The title marks a high point in their footballing journey and sets the stage for future ambitions in Southeast Asia and beyond.
