The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed a significant increase in prize money for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, to be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
In a groundbreaking announcement, CAF confirmed that the tournament winner will receive USD 3.5 million, marking a 75% increase from the previous prize structure. The total prize pool for the competition has also been elevated to USD 10.4 million, representing a 32% increase overall.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe emphasized the strategic importance of these financial enhancements, stating that the increases align with CAF's broader vision to develop Africa-based football talent and enhance the continent's global competitiveness. "This competition is part of our strategy of investing in African football and making it appealing and attractive to football fans, TV viewers, sponsors, partners and other stakeholders in Africa and worldwide," Dr. Motsepe explained.
The tournament, scheduled to run from February 1 to February 28, 2025, has already confirmed 17 participating nations, including defending champions Morocco, along with host nations Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Other qualified teams include Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar. Two additional spots remain to be filled through upcoming qualifying matches.
CHAN, which exclusively features players from domestic leagues within their respective countries, continues to serve as a vital platform for showcasing Africa's homegrown talent. This substantial prize money increase demonstrates CAF's commitment to strengthening domestic football across the continent and elevating the tournament's prestige on the global stage.
