The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is gearing up for a historic 2025, set to be one of its busiest years to date.
With a calendar filled with high-profile tournaments and significant events, CAF is emphasizing its commitment to advancing African football at all levels, from youth and women’s competitions to elite club and national team events.
A Year of Continental Showdowns
Leading the schedule are two marquee tournaments: the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, and the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024, which runs into July 2025. AFCON, Africa’s premier football event, will see 24 nations vying for continental glory from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The last AFCON, hosted by Côte d’Ivoire, shattered global viewership records, and CAF expects Morocco 2025 to surpass these achievements.
On the women’s side, South Africa will defend their WAFCON title from July 5–26, 2025, as they return to the site of their 2022 triumph. Alongside powerhouse teams like Nigeria and Zambia, the tournament underscores the rapid growth of women’s football on the continent.
Youth Competitions Taking Center Stage
CAF’s investment in youth football shines brightly with several events in 2025. The TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 will take place from March 30 to April 19, providing a stage for 10 teams to vie for a spot in the expanded FIFA U-17 World Cup. Meanwhile, the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2025 will run from April 26 to May 18, with the top four teams qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
These youth tournaments highlight CAF’s dedication to nurturing talent and showcasing the future stars of African football.
Elite Club Competitions
The continent’s top clubs will also battle for supremacy in 2025. The TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2024-2025 will conclude with a two-legged final on May 24 and June 1, where teams compete for a USD 4 million prize. Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who have dominated recent editions, will face stiff competition as clubs across Africa aim to dethrone the reigning champions.
Similarly, the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup 2024-2025 will wrap up on May 17 and 25. Zamalek, another Egyptian powerhouse, will seek to defend their title after a stellar campaign in 2024.
Focus on Schools and Grassroots
CAF’s grassroots initiatives include the African Schools Football Championship Finals 2025, where top boys’ and girls’ teams from across the continent will compete. These events play a crucial role in developing football from the ground up, fostering passion and skills in young players.
Milestones Beyond the Pitch
The 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly on March 12, 2025, in Cairo, will see the election of key CAF executives and FIFA Council members. This marks an important moment for African football governance as the organization charts its future.
